CivilWar_budget_D7

Introduction

Learn about the conflict that ended slavery and shaped America's future. Our 7-day American Civil War - A Nation Tested on a Budget Tour takes you to the most iconic battlefields of the War Between the States. The Eastern Theater was defined by the proximity of Washington, D.C. and Richmond. We will visit Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg and other battlefields born of the two sides' attempts to capture the enemy's capital. This shorter, budget version of our all-inclusive American Civil War: A Nation Tested Tour also gives you more freedom in budgeting for your own meals and leaves you more free time to explore sites on your own.

Itinerary

  • Passengers are greeted at Ronald Reagan National Airport. The afternoon is spent touring Ford's Theatre and Arlington National Cemetery. In the evening there is an introduction to the tour and a chance to get acquainted over a welcome drink.

  • In the morning we head to the Shenandoah Valley and the picturesque town of Harpers Ferry, where in 1859 abolitionist John Brown tried to seize the Virginia State arsenal in an attempt to start a slave revolt. We follow the events leading up to September 1862 at Antietam, where the bloodiest single-day battle in American history took place.

  • Following a morning of exploring the area near Manassas, Virginia and the Battles of Bull Run, we head north to Gettysburg and start with an optional visit to the Jennie Wade House. This museum dedicated to the only civilian killed in the Battle of Gettysburg also houses an exhibit on domestic life during wartime.

  • The day is dedicated to the Battle of Gettysburg. We will enjoy a guided Battlefield tour, with free time in Gettysburg and optional visits to the Gettysburg National Park Museum, Cyclorama or the Eisenhower House.

  • Leaving Union ground behind, we head to the capital of the Confederate South: Richmond. On our way we stop to explore Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania.

  • Petersburg, Virginia was the site of the longest siege in American warfare. Considered the gateway to the fall of Richmond, we revisit the 10 months in the trenches that led up to Robert E. Lee's retreat and surrender. The afternoon is dedicated to Appomattox Courthouse where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865.

  • After saying goodbye, our guests are brought to Richmond International Airport for their return flights.
