15-day London to Normandy 77 - 2021

Introduction

The 77th anniversary of D-Day
This 15-day tour combining our Battle of Britain and Normandy 77 Tour is perfect for those who want to follow the development of D-Day from idea to execution. We start in England, where we delve into the Battle of Britain, honoring the tenacity of the locals who lived for months under constant German bombardment. We lay the foundations of Operation Overlord from code-breaking at Bletchley Park to designating the D-Day landing sectors at Southwick House. We then cross the English Channel to see the implementation of the invasion by visiting all five landing beaches, with emphasis on infantry and airborne operations as well as recognizing the paramount roles that naval and USAAC support played on June 6, 1944. We attend a special commemoration ceremony in Normandy. Adding further flavor to the week's activities is a vast array of World War II vehicles on display and in motion, parachute jumps, air shows, and much more, which we aim to attend as their timing and our itinerary allows.
Please note that the exact schedule of local D-Day anniversary celebrations has not been announced yet. The order of events on our anniversary tour is liable to change to accommodate the celebrations.

  • In the morning we head south to the White Cliffs of Dover, where we visit the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne. We continue with a visit to Dover Castle, where the story of the Battle of Britain starts: the planning of Operation Dynamo took place here in the bunkers under the over 800-year-old fortress.

  • In the morning, we honor the fallen at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial. We spend the afternoon at Imperial War Museum Duxford, an old wartime airfield that hosts an incredible collection of military aircraft from WWII and other periods.

  • We start the day with a visit to the No. 11 Group Operations Room and underground bunker at Uxbridge. In the afternoon, we travel to Bletchley Park, where code breakers greatly contributed to the war effort.

  • We cross the English Channel to Normandy and join up with guests who are arriving for the Normandy Invasion and Beyond Band of Brothers Tours.

  • The day starts with a visit to Dead Man's Corner Museum in St-Come-du-Mont and an opportunity to buy authentic and replica WWII items. We then stop at the monument near Brecourt Manor, site of Easy Company's famous assault on a German artillery position. The afternoon features visits to Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église.

  • We begin the day with a visit to Omaha Beach and the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. The day continues with a trip to Pointe du Hoc, where Rudder's Rangers ascended the steep cliffs to take out the long-range artillery threatening the landing beaches.

  • The day's highlight is the 77th anniversary celebration of D-Day.

  • We spend the morning in the medieval island abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, which was a popular tourist destination for occupying German soldiers during the war.

  • The day is dedicated to the Falaise Pocket, where many of the German defenders of Normandy were eventually encircled. The trip includes the castle of William of Normandy, who conquered England in 1066, and the Montormel Memorial at the hill where Polish troops plugged the gap on the Pocket.

  • We explore the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer, then drive on to Arromanches at Gold Beach, where one of the two Mulberry Harbors was constructed. Later in the day we also make stops at Juno and Sword Beaches, and Pegasus Bridge.
